Who Pays for Pollution? The Polluter Pays Levy

Date: Friday 24 July
Time: 12:00pm – 12:50pm
Location: Fringe Room 3
Format: Panel discussion

Organisation: LEAN and the Superpower Institute

The politics of climate are hard – but not acting will be harder.

Join LEAN in conversation with the Superpower Institute to learn more about their Polluter Pays Levy proposal, as we explore: how it works, who it protects, who pays, and whether it can help Labor build a fairer path to net zero.

Climate policy can help pay for the things Australians rely on. This proposal looks at whether the biggest polluters can contribute more to the services and support that keep communities running — things like hospitals, transport, housing, cost-of-living relief and a stable budget.

It’s about exploring if there is a fairer way forward, where the transition supports everyday people and strengthens the systems we all depend on. And whether it is an idea whose time has come politically.

  • Dr Ingrid Burfurd, Economic Research Director, The Superpower Institute
