Equality Delivers: A Gender Impact Assessment of the 47th Parliament of Australia

Chifley Research Centre and Gender Lens Australia

April 2026

Across its first term, the Albanese Labor Government delivered a significant and coordinated program of reform to advance gender equality in Australia. Through record investment in women’s safety, structural changes to improve economic security, major reforms to strengthen Medicare and women’s health, and progress in leadership and representation, the 47th Parliament marked a clear shift toward a more deliberate and evidence-based approach to gender equality.

This report provides an impact assessment of those reforms and reveals that they have produced measurable progress towards gender equality. Australia’s global standing on gender equality has improved markedly, the gender pay gap has narrowed, wages have grown, and access to essential services such as childcare, healthcare and income support has expanded. Important foundations have also been laid in areas that require long-term change, including primary prevention of gender-based violence, pay equity, and the recognition of care as central to the economy.

Gender equality is not only a matter of fairness. It is fundamental to economic performance, social cohesion and the prevention of violence. The progress made during the 47th Parliament shows what is possible when gender is treated as a central consideration in policy development. The task ahead is to maintain momentum, close the remaining gaps, and ensure that the gains achieved are embedded, protected and extended for the years to come.
