This CRC policy paper highlights the shortcomings of Australia’s current Environmental Laws. It offers a way forward for a new structural framework for protecting our environment.
With threats to the environment – including climate change and rapid population growth – expected to escalate over coming years, we need a new environmental governance regime that is up to the task and the demands of the 21st century.
The key recommendations of this report are to create a new legislative framework to replace the current Act, and the creation of a new body – the National Environment Commission. This report by Chifley Research Centre and LEAN should prompt a rethink of the framework for environmental protection in Australia and provides a blueprint for Commonwealth leadership on this important issue.
