At the recently held 2009 NSW ALP State Conference, the Chifley Research Centre hosted a forum on policy alternatives for progressive governments at the State and Territory level.
Host Tim Gartrell was joined by Kristina Keneally, Minister for Planning and Minister for Redfern Waterloo, David Borger, Minister for Housing and Minister for Western Sydney, Eric Sidoti, Director of the Whitlam Institue and Mel Gatfield, Assistance Secretary LHMU NSW.
Each of the four speakers had much to contribute from many different perspectives. David Borger enlightened the audicence with a history of the development of social housing and related it back to his priorities as a minister of a progressive government. Kristina Keneally discussed the intersection of the needs to implement practical lasting policies with the need to remain focussed on the values that underpin progressive reform. Mel Gatfield widened the discussion by talking about the need for citizens and workers to initiate engagement with progressive governments and Eric Sidoti completed the forum by disussing what exactly is needed in order to build a progressive agenda for State governments.
This was an engaging and well attended session and you can watch the speeches from the event below:
